Näyttely Sedimented Time käsittelee tilan ja ajan yhteyttä toisiinsa horisontaalisissa maalauksissa, joissa kuvatila ja kolmiulotteinen esineellinen tila yhdistyvät. Maalauksissani on eräänlainen tila-aika. Katsoja voi ajallisessa prosessissaan avata ja sulkea ovia ja siivekkeitä paljastaen ja peittäen maalauksissa avautuvia näkymiä. Teosten moniulotteiseen tilallisuuteen on sisään rakentunut kyseenalaistava ajattelu: muutoksen mahdollisuus, poissaolo ja ”toinen puoli”. Aika saa useita merkityksiä maalauksissa sarjasta Sedimented Time (2015–2017). Teosten pintoihin on kirjoitettu ja peilikirjoitettu aikaa ilmentäviä merkintöjä, esimerkiksi kellonaikoja. Nämä merkinnät luovat ympäristön, jossa ajan lineaarinen luonne murtuu ja ajallisuuden kokemuksen kerrostumien, suuntien ja siirtymien tila aukenee ja muotoutuu. Teosteni olennainen piirre on tilallinen kaksoismerkitys; merkitykset tapahtuvat samanaikaisesti illusorisessa kuvatilassa ja ruumiillisessa huonetilassa. Suhteessa ajallisuuden teemaan tämä tarkoittaa, että maalaus luo elokuvallisen tilanteen, johon astutaan sisään. (Please, scroll down for the English text and images.) Utställningen Sedimented Time behandlar förbindelsen mellan rum och tid i horisontala målningar, i vilka bildsfären och den tredimensionella objektlika rumsligheten förenas. I mina målningar finns ett slags rum-tid. Åskådaren kan i sin timliga process, genom att öppna och stänga dörrar och vingar, avtäcka och täcka vyn som öppnar sig i verken. Inne i verkens mångsidiga rumslighet byggs en ifrågasättande tanke upp: möjligheten till förändringar, absens, och ”den andra sidan”. Tiden har flera innebörder i målningarna ur serien Sedimented Time (2015–2017). På målningarnas ytor finns skrivna och spegelvända anteckningar om tiden, till exempel klocktider. Dessa anteckningar skapar kontexten där tidens lineära karaktär bryts och den temporala upplevelsens sediment, direktioner och övergångar öppnas och formas. Den rumsliga dubbelbetydelsen är väsentlig i mina verk; betydelser bildas simultant i den illusoriska bildsfären och det kroppsliga rummet. I förhållande till det temporala temat innebär detta att målningen skapar en situation som liknar en film och i vilken man stiger in.

The exhibition Sedimented Time reflects on the intertwining of space with time in horizontal paintings that combine the pictorial space and the three-dimensional object-like space. There is a kind of space-time in my paintings. In the temporal process of opening and closing the doors and wings, the viewer can reveal and hide the views that appear in the works. A sort of critical thinking is built into the multidimensional spatiality of the works: the possibility of change, absence and “the other side”. Time has several meanings in the paintings from the series Sedimented Time (2015–2017). There are writings and mirror-image writings on the surfaces, notes presenting time, for example clock times. These notations of time create a context in which the linear character of time collapses and the layers, directions and transitions of subjective temporality unfold and form. The double meaning of space is an essential feature of my works; the meanings occur simultaneously in the pictorial space and the bodily space of the room. In relation to the theme of temporality, this implies that the painting creates a cinematic situation into which the viewer enters. Kaija Mäenpää
